Why Storylines Rock!

Why Storylines Rock!

You’ve heard about storylines, but why are they so great? I’ve got answers using a peak of an NGSS aligned Earth Science storyline as an example!

This free workshop features an overview of an Earth science storyline from phenomenon to investigation to assessment.

You’ll learn the ins and outs of NGSS aligned storylines while seeing a storyline come to life.

Students analyze data to determine how gypsum formed in this NGSS earth science storyline.

Date: June 22, 2024

Time: 10:00am CST

Length: One Hour (Max)

Location: Virtual (You will receive a link prior to the training)

Registered participants can access a recording for 7 days.

  • Teachers who are just getting their feet wet with storylines.
  • Earth science teachers who have seen the bio storylines, but now it’s our turn.
  • Teachers interested in using Earth science storylines in their classroom, but want to check them out first.

A Quick Peek into Why Storylines Rock!

Traditional Teaching vs. NGSS Storylines

We do a quick run-through of how teaching using NGSS storylines is different than a traditional teaching approach. NGSS is a transformation, so hold on to your seats.

Unpacking the Standards

What are the three dimensions and what does that actually mean in your classroom? We break it down in a way that makes practical sense.

Components of a Storyline

Performance expectations, phenomenon, investigations, and 3-dimensional assessment – these are just the highlights. These terms may be new to you, but you can see how accessible a storyline can really be for teachers and students.

Overview of White Sands National Park Storyline

Enough talking about storylines, let’s look at one! NGSS storylines are easiest to visualize and understand when you can see what we’re talking about. This NGSS aligned Earth science storyline is used as an introductory storyline at the beginning of the course.

Three horizontal images that feature national parks. Top image is white sand dunes at White Sands National Park. Middle image is lava flowing out of black rock at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Bottom image is mountains with snow in some places at Glacier National Park.

Benefits of Storylines for Teachers & Students

Of course there are benefits! There are lots of benefits, otherwise we wouldn’t use storylines. We’ll go through why NGSS storylines are the better approach to science for teachers and students.

Advice for Teachers

>> Transition to NGSS storylines overtime. This process is a marathon not a sprint. It’s not an all or nothing transition.

>> You don’t need to go at this alone! Transitioning to NGSS aligned storylines is a big deal, which is why having a supportive community is so important. We have a fabulous interactive community in a private Facebook group, NGSS Earth Science Storylines. You’re welcome to join us!
